Meng Hao really can’t be considered a good MC, morality wise. At best he is neutral with.

incredibly rare acts of selflessness, not evil or good specifically, he only almost always only helps people when it benefits him or people that he cares about – he isn’t altruistic at all (remember when he was going ignore that cultivator who intended to kidnap and rape a weaker cultivator for the purpose of yin yang cultivation, until he found a use for her himself back in the third ring iirc?).

I read TI, GOR, ATG, ISSTH, DE, WDKQ, PW and TDG (and MGA up to around 500-600, I had to quit that drivel) and I feel like the only truly good MCs out of those come GOR and DE. Probably PW too, as the character is merely mischievous, not evil or neutral.

Obviously my views on morality come from a pretty modern and non-neckbeardy place, I don’t think things like corrective rape (MGA, so much rape, holy crap, the author has a fetish for it or something) and countless acts of molestation (ATG, hurr durr “Smooth Che strikes again!” ) are funny and badass like many of the commenters on this site seem to think so. My point being that good and bad is subjective, so I’m no more right than the people who disagree with me are really and with that acknowledged, that people don’t flame me if they happen to disagree.

讲道理，孟浩真的不该被当成一个好主角，最多说他是中性的。他那些罕见得难以置信的、善恶不明的无私行为只是在帮助那些他在意的或会给他带来好处的人——他压根不是利他的(记得吗?如果不是他发现那个受害者对他有用,他本会无视那个为阴阳修炼而猥亵别人的修真者)。

我读了《无限恐怖》、《天启之门》、《逆天邪神》、《我欲封天》、《莽荒纪》、《武动乾坤》、 《完美世界》和《妖神记》(还有《修罗武神》，读了五六百章实在不行了弃了)，我觉得这当中真正的好主角就是《天启》和《莽荒》的,也许《完美世界》的也是，因为他只是调皮,不中立也不坏。

当然,我对道德的看法是出于一个非常现代和不关己的立场，我不认为有粉饰的强暴之类的事情(《修罗武神》里的强暴太多了，靠，作者特别好这口还是怎么的)以及不计其数的骚扰行为(如《逆天邪神》,“车又开起来了!”)是有趣的,但这里的许多混蛋评论者似乎这么认为。我的意思是，好坏是主观判断，我并不比那些与我不一致的人正确——如果这是个共识，那么与我意见不合的人也不该和我撕。

My response to a friend who didn’t like ISSTH much because of it’s forced plot,the mc’s lack of personal motivation and how it’s centered around survival.And this was my response to him.I thought i should shared here for others who are on the fence as well to read it.

Even though ISSTH has 300+ chapters,so far most of it indeed was survival since our MC was trapped into his fate as a cultivator not by choice.

‘Standing all alone’ is the theme of the story which Er Gen continuously FORCES on the MC whenever he wants to settle down,which was evident in the most recent arc ‘The Violet Fate Sect’ were the MC felt home.

In this case the forcing is necessary and Er Gen doesn’t hide it,because the plot develops as a sequence of events in which each event has a different cause or causes.

This is not about unrelated, random events,but events related to the big conflicts of MC’s mysterious world.The struggle of our MC is actually used to show us bits and parts of the larger,underlying plot.

Er Gen made it so that the MC doesn’t need a big goal to achieve RIGHT NOW to move along the plot,but made the plot move along the MC in a sequence of events in which the MC progresses by obtaining bits and parts of his latter goal which is unbenounced TO HIM and US readers!

ISSTH as a novel is like a breath of fresh air,because an intelligent MC who doesn’t have a set path nor goal to work towards asks for intelligent, coherent scenarios from the author and so far Er Gen is delivering!

The lack of personal motivation is something this series can’t do without,because it opens up so many ways to move forward the story!

I hated ISSTH first book a lot,almost dropped it and now it’s one of my favorites because i never see Er Gen’s scenarios coming! Which is rare in Xianxia stories!

我有一个因强行推进剧情、主角缺乏个人动力、全书以生存为中心而不喜欢《封天》 的朋友,这是我对他的回复。我觉得有必要把它分享在这里，给因为同样原因不阅读《封天》的其他人。

即使《封天》现有三百多章，其中绝大部分的确是写“生存”，因为我们的主角被他注定的修真者命运困住了。

“孑然一身”是这个故事的主题。无论何时主角想安定下来，耳根都一直强迫他保持孤独——在当主角有家的感觉时，如最近的“紫罗兰命运”部分——这表现得尤其明显。

在这种情况下,“强行”是必须的——耳根也并不掩饰这一点，因为情节是事件发展的结果，而事件有一个或许多个起因。这不是无关的、随机的事件，而是与主角神秘世界的重大冲突有关的事件。而我们主角的奋斗正让我们窥得那潜藏的、更大的剧情。

耳根做到了。因此当前主角并不需要一个待达成的大目标来推动剧情，只是通过获得那个还未向他和读者们揭晓的后期目标的线索来让剧情随着事件(主角在其中也得提升) 的结果一同前进。

《封天》这小说就像一口清新的空气,因为要推动一个智慧的、没有既定道路和目标的主角需要作者的智慧和连贯的场景，而目前耳根正很好地完成着!

这系列并不靠个人动力来完成，因为它开放了如此之多的方式来推动故事!

我很不喜欢《封天》的第一本书，几乎弃了；现在它是我最喜欢的书之一，因为我从没看出耳根的剧本！这在仙侠小说里是很少见的！

评点：以生存为中心的“无目的”是许多读者认为《我欲封天》是“一股清流”并对其大加赞赏的原因。不过……你们还是对中国网络小说接触太少了啊年轻人，这在国内也还是套路啊！

This is my first comment in WW realm. I decided to bestow my first to ISSTH IMHO the strong point of this series is the ability of the author to set up and trigger the flag.

In addition the twist and rich comedy (Have faith in the Lord Fifth, gain eternal life!) give more incentives to the reader. But my favorite is the deep dao in this series, which make me want to learn Chinese.

I nearly drop the path of WW cultivation because the same premises and how predictable the other story. Then I Found the path of enlightenment in ISSTH. I agree with fellow daoist here who said, the other story come pale in comparison. The ISSTH alone can’t be said to be perfect (No offence to fellow daoist here), but so far the most exciting reading experience was this one.

我觉得，这系列的关键点是作者竖立和触发 flag 的能力。另外，多样而丰富的幽默(信五爷，得永生!)也给了读者更多的愉悦。但我最喜欢的还是小说中深刻的道,这让我想学中文。

由于其他小说相似的设定及其千篇一律，我几乎要放弃我的武侠修真之路。然后我在《封天》中发现了光明之路。我同意这儿的道友说的，其他小说相形见绌。仅就《封天》而言,它难称完美(不是冒犯道友们)，但目前最令人兴奋的阅读体验由它而来。

非常感谢翻译的辛勤工作!

评点：这位粉丝所说的“竖立和触发flag的能力”应该就是爽点吧，看来这位道友已经触摸到网文最关键的因素了。至于“小说中深刻的道”，国内读者由于读得太多了反而没感觉，由身处不同文化的海外读者的视角来观照似乎很有趣。说不定哪一天真能看到一群“外来的和（dao）尚（you）会念经”呢哈哈。

I think this is not so good, after reading 2200 chapters of MGA, I just can’t get enough

intrested when read ISSTH. Meng Hao has no purpose, he is just pointless trying to become stronger, the world itself does not have a stable laws and abilities just a random collection of words without sistematization, the universe lacks logic and MC is lacks purposefulness. So after 296 chapter I’m drop it, read it in future only then it get more translated chapters.

Sorry for my bad writing, I’m russian and learn English only by reading.

我并不认为这本书有那么好,在读了2200多章的《修罗武神》之后，我在读《封天》时并没有什么兴趣。孟浩没有目的,他只是随意地试着变强，这世界本身没有稳定的规律和能力，不系统，只是文字的随机集合。这个宇宙缺乏逻辑,主角漫无目的。所以 296章之后我就弃了，如果翻了更多章的话我才会读。

Friends，I started this story a long while back. I think that it was the first of the behemoth Chinese Novels that I read.

Somewhere back around chapter 600 or so I ran out of story and there was a delay long enough that the story got cold in my mind.

Yeah, I have never been good with names or faces—no, faces in the real world—and keeping track of the unfamiliar Chinese names bewilders me. So many of the characters were long since forgotten.

Nonetheless, this is an epic tale so I’ve decided to start over from the beginning. The story is worth it.

Yeah, one of my favorite phantasies is to inherit 80-Billion dollars (Why dream about piddling Millions in a phantasy?)

But one of my projects would be to buy the English speaking movie rights to this story, hire the best people and produce as many high-budget blockbusters as it would take to do full justice to the story.

Maybe the movies would flop? Well as long as I enjoyed them-so what? Remember, in this phantasy I’m a multibillionaire!

我是好久以前追这个文的。这是我读的第一本超长篇中国小说。当时大概是看到了600多章就没了，所以拖了这么久，在我脑子里这个故事已经快忘光了。

对，我向来不擅长记名字和脸——脸是指现实世界中——所以这么一大堆不熟悉的中国人名字把我搞得很懵，好多人物在很久以前就都忘了。

但是，这是个史诗般的故事，所以我决定从头再开始看一遍。这个故事值得我这么干。

嗯，我最喜欢的幻想之一就是继承800亿美元的遗产（为啥只想几百万呢，反正是幻想）。

我的计划之一就是买下这个故事的英文版电影版权，雇最顶尖的团队来把它拍成超级大-片的水平，对于这个故事来说这是坠吼的。

或许这个电影会黄？反正我喜欢就行，毕竟在这个幻想里我是超级亿万富翁。

Since he couldn’t even kill Blacksoul, don’t expect him to be able to kill the more powerful alliance leader.

The only way for the alliance to be destroyed imo, would be to use the Sun Sword/Bow and Moon Armor, at this stage it’s clear Meng Hao lacks the power to destroy a 3-essence Dao Lord on hes own even with all trumph cards he possesses.

Will be interesting for sure to read about how the situation will be handled either an “unexpected” upgrade in power will occur, or they find out Meng Hao’s status of future lord of the mountain and seas realm and decide not to pursue it anymore lest they be killed.

他甚至连黑魂都杀不掉，别期待他能干掉其他更厉害的联盟领导了。

摧毁联盟的唯一方法就是使用阳星之弓/九封剑和月星之甲了，现在显然孟浩自己缺乏摧毁三源道主的实力，即便他占据着全部优势。

很快我们就肯定会喜闻乐见地看到，一个“意想不到的”实力升级导致面前的难题得到解决，或者他们发现孟浩的未来山海之主的地位，并决定不再追求它免得被杀。

I don’t think I’ll ever be able to understand the chinese. I go around randomly blowing up animals for a day, kill several hundred for no other reason than it seemed fun, but the second I kill a person who was trying to murder me, I feel bad. Sorry, just can’t understand the logic of the chinese in general. Almost all the series where killing is done, they randomly slaughter things and at some point they feel bad for killing someone that obviously deserved it. I just wish people would make up their mind, either be a pacifist that dies or be a killer and own up to it, seeing them feel bad for killing one creature while not for killing hundreds of others is just stupid.

我觉得我理解不了这个中国人。我在四周乱晃，无缘无故地随便杀了一整天动物，只是觉得很好玩。但随后我杀了个试图杀我的人，我就觉得难过？不好意思，对他的逻辑完全理解不能。杀了一大堆动物，屁事没有。杀了个该死的人，觉得难过？我觉得他脑子有问题。要么做个和平主义者去死，要么老老实实去当个杀戮者，杀一个人觉得难过但杀了一堆动物却没事？这不是智障么。

That’s because that is just the kind of world it is. the strong prey on the weak. look at qin yu from ST he doesn’t feel bad about killing but that doesn’t mean he is not kind i mean he never really provokes anyone without good reason and he is the one that is always getting attacked so why blame him for retaliating. same thing with linley.

I actually think that meng hao is a bit na-iv-e and that he has to change his mentality or else he will definitely get killed in the future.

And what makes you say that animals aren’t special? humans are also animals. you would find it just as hard to kill an animal who you have been living with for years as you would to kill a human. so in this sense, a wild animal you dont know would be the same as a human you don’t know. meng hao kiled hundreds of animals and he felt nothing and he felt horrible after killing wugang. this is hypocrisy at its best.

真心认为孟浩有点幼稚，他要么改掉这种心理，要么将来绝逼被杀。

另外，你凭什么说动物不特殊呢？人类也是动物。杀一只与你朝夕相处多年的动物与杀人一样难。所以从这个意义上来说，一只你不认识的野生动物如同一个你不认识的陌生人。孟浩杀了几百只动物并且内心毫无波动，却在杀了赵武钢之后觉得可怕。这就是虚伪。

评点：感觉西方的动物保护确实做得很不错啊，这人跟动物还真已经一视同仁了。不过网文里杀妖兽跟西方屠龙是一个性质吧，造成这样的误解可能跟翻译有关系。

I honestly wanted this to go the harem route since the characters are amazing and I’ve really liked a lot of the females, but in this story that is absolutely impossible at this point to do that, and would probably make me lose a lot of respect for Meng Hao if that did happen, since it runs counter to his beliefs.

We also have to take into account that Xian Ni was Er Gen’s first major work. ISSTH is a culmination of the what he’s learned from writing the previous two web novels. While Xian Ni is dark, it’s still filled with a ton of creative ideas. Er Gen’s background was also researching other older fantasy stories throughout Chinese history. For some reason, the mood in a lot of stories end with the good becoming bad, or bad actually being good and the MC going through a lot of changes that blur the lines. It’s imbedded in the culture as a whole.

I was actually surprised to see that ISSTH has been so level this far in the story. Who knows how it ends up, but this has been a fun adventure story up to this point. I like that he’s sought balance in telling the story instead of things going further and further down the hole. Who knows, perhaps we’ll see some resolution with Xian Ni soon. I believe the revenge part is going to come to its climax in the 250 range for that storyline and there are a lot of chapters after that so things could turn around.

我确实惊讶地发现《我欲封天》在故事性上已经达到了这么高的水平。我不知道它会如何结尾，但关键在于（享受）这个有趣的冒险故事本身。我喜欢他在讲述故事时寻求平衡，而不是让故事失去掌控、跌落深渊。谁知道呢，我们或许会很快看到与《仙逆》类似的桥段。我相信复仇情节将会在这个故事线的250章内达到高-潮，之后还有很多章节可以用来反转。

评点：这位粉丝似乎对我国古典文化很有了解。

Thanks for the chapter.

But I wonder when will the dragging stop, they are just dragging the story with bunch of short chapters with no content at all.

If I can resume this chapter I could say, “Meng Hao, get on the deck, took a carriage and move into the city” end of the chapter. The previous one was, “Meng Hao, travel for half a day and got into the deck”.

Er gen’s writing is my favorite style. Therefore, I already know what to expect from this. My favorite novel series has a similar style to this one in many ways. With that thought in mind, I know that this is just another one of those things that look bad when they’re actually quite good. People always complain about these sorts of things way too early. It’s obvious that Er Gen wouldn’t suddenly devolve into writing poorly, which means that something else is going on.

I’m just continually disappointed that fans of series like this can’t understand what is actually happening behind the scenes. That sort of thing is something the protagonists in these types of stories do a lot, so the readers should have learned to do the same by now. Well, regardless, I expect things to be not as they seem right now storywise.

第二类评论是就小说中的情节进行分析。读者们会猜测主角孟浩下一步会怎么办，例如Miothan1220中评论道：“很快我们就肯定会喜闻乐见地见到，一个“意想不到的”实力升级导致面前的难题得到解决，或者他们发现孟浩的未来山海之主的地位，并决定不再追求它免得被杀”。但对于情节进行评论的同时，很多读者也会分析角色行为的动机，从而开始小说价值观方面的讨论。除了国内读者也会讨论的主角是否太暴-力/心慈手软/开后宫等之外，海外读者还会关注一些国内读者几乎注意不到的地方。比如Darkanlan就在第九章（孟浩的镜子法宝可以通过炸掉妖兽的屁股来杀死它们）后评论到：“我觉得我理解不了这个中国人。我在四周乱晃，无缘无故地随便杀了一整天动物，只是觉得很好玩。但随后我杀了个试图杀我的人，我就觉得难过？……要么做个和平主义者去死，要么老老实实去当个杀戮者，杀一个人觉得难过但杀了一堆动物却没事？这不是智障么。”

关于“孟浩为什么不将人和动物一视同仁”这个话题有许多讨论，有些读者表示“人类是特殊的”，但也有读者直接喷了回去，“你凭什么说动物不特殊呢？人类也是动物。杀一只与你朝夕相处多年的动物与杀人一样难。所以从这个意义上来说，一只你不认识的野生动物如同一个你不认识的陌生人。孟浩杀了几百只动物并且内心毫无波动，却在杀了赵武钢之后觉得可怕。这就是虚伪。”（Just Some Guy）从某种意义上说，可以从中看到海外读者对我们已经习惯的“修炼者——妖兽”对立的不理解，以及国外对“爱护动物”方面的态度。

第三类评论是对小说拖剧情的抱怨，针对的也就是国内读者司空见惯的“水”。例如Randomfan在第636章下评论的“但我在想什么时候能别再拖剧情了，现在作者分明是在把一堆短章节拉长，水的都没有内容了。”一个明显是老司机的叫Darkraiders的读者安慰他，“你要习惯一下，这种小说就这样，至少就我所知，这个小说在拖剧情的时候已经算是写得比较好了。我还见过小说里主角在一场战斗中只做了一个动作呢，然后作者花3~4章来写围观群众对这个动作的反应（三姑六婆惊叹流）。还有的小说，把同样的话重复好几行，这个拖剧情的方式更糟心。”除了中外同心的对“水”的反感之外，我们还能看到一些在中文中表示强调的形式（重要的事说三遍）在翻译过去之后无法被歪果仁理解，也算是文化差异造成的有趣现象。

与此同时，我们也可以从这些抱怨中看到中国网文非常吸引海外读者的一点，就是精彩的内容。许多读者对此很清楚，比如barlyn就评论说“这系列的关键点是作者竖立和触发 flag 的能力。”eragrinus也说“我确实惊讶地发现《我欲封天》在故事性上已经达到了这么高的水平。我不知道它会如何结尾，但关键在于（享受）这个有趣的冒险故事本身。我喜欢他在讲述故事时寻求平衡，而不是让故事失去掌控、跌落深渊。”在这一点上，中外读者的需求都是类似的。不过海外读者的步伐并不仅仅停留在此，有很多喜爱《我欲封天》的读者都认为小说让他们体悟到了“道”，“深刻”“思想”“哲学”这些通常不会出现在国内评论区的词也纷纷出现在了评论中，甚至还有许多读者表示自己对中国文化产生了兴趣，要去学中文。然而也有读者表示“这么一大堆不熟悉的中国人名字把我搞得很懵，好多人物在很久以前就都忘了。”衷心希望他们向中华文化的求学之路不要因这种文化差异而“中道崩殂”。

第四类是对作者和译者表示感激的评论。这类评论占据了评论区的大-片江山，类似于我们看剧时对字幕组的感谢。也是因为它们的存在，让wuxiaworld的评论区在大部分时间看起来其乐融融。当然，海外读者也“撕”，不过碍于大环境比较强调互相尊重，通常“撕”得很有礼貌，仿佛只是在表达一个毫无火药味的观点。不过由于《我欲封天》的死忠粉甚多，一些黑粉在“黑”作品的时候也相当警惕，比如刚才提到的称《我欲封天》“宇宙缺乏逻辑，主角漫无目的”的 Konstantin 就在喷了作品一通后不忘在评论后面加上一句“我的意思是，好坏是主观判断，我并不比那些与我不一致的人正确——如果这是个共识，那么与我意见不合的人也不该和我撕。”感觉是个有故事的黑粉。而在看了一名叫dniv的死忠粉的评论之后，我认为这位Konstantin同学的担心是有道理的，dniv非常忠诚地表示“我只是对小说的粉丝很失望，因为他们没法理解字句背后隐藏的深意。这类小说的主角做了很多类似的事情，所以读者现在应该已经学会了按相同的思路去想才对。”显然已经非常信任作品和作者。这位读者的死忠甚至延续到了耳根的新作《一念永恒》(A Will Eternal),在夸奖《一念永恒》的同时不忘表达“我爱《我欲封天》”。不过他并非孤例，有相当一批读者在刚开始更新的《一念永恒》下评论“仿佛看到了当年的孟浩”，一路追下来，可谓对《我欲封天》极有感情。

更有趣的是，孟浩的鹦鹉有句名言叫“信五爷，得永生！五爷一出，谁与争锋！”这句话也常常被用在评论区欢乐刷屏，和原句所戏仿的、当年的“信春哥得永生”类似，成为调笑式的、特定族群自我标识和互相辨认的标志。
